Baixa – Avenida da Liberdade – Parque Eduardo VII – Amoreiras – Jardim da Estrela – Campo de Ourique – Alcantara – Rio Tejo

Yes, Lisbon can be hilly. But it is not that hilly as you think once if you know where to go. We keep it with only one uphill in the beginning which brings us up to Parque Eduardo VII and an amazing view to the city centre. Once we are up there the tough part is mainly done.

We slowly start our way back down to the river through the beautiful neighbourhoods of Amroeiras and Estrela with typical and traditional portuguese life far away from the tourism crowd. At the neighbourhoods of Estrela and Madragoa we cross some of the most lovely parks of Lisbon, before we see one of Lisbon’s centres of subculture at LX Factory and finally reach Rio Tejo for the easiest and relaxing part along the river to come back to the centre on a cycling lane.

Unfortunately the west side of Lisbon is not equipped with very much cycling lanes, so that we have to stay in the traffic most of the time. But the small lanes are very comfortable to ride, cars are slow and traffic is quiet. The total of 20 km comes with not more than 300m of uphill and should be accessible for everyone who doesn´t consider him-/herself as a couch potato. On this three hours ride surely you will discover zones of the city otherwise you wouldn’t come to and most of Lisbon’s visitors didn’t ever see. But believe me: It´s worth to go

Baixa – Mouraria – Intendente – Alameda – Parque de Bela Vista – Marvila – Parque das Nacoes

Barely outside the well-known, historic and trendy city center, we find a suprisingly different city. Full of streetart and empty parks, modern architecture and industrial ruins: discover the other Lisbon!

Indian, Chines and African neighborhoods, Bohemian lifestyle, portuguese Cafes and “Tascas”: in  Mouraria, Intendente, Anjos every street seems to be a micro-cosmos.

After this we arrive in a surprisingly green part of the city at Alameda. Specially during the weekends the open park is an attraction, when the massive water fountain is turned on. A short but rough uphill later we find ourselfs at Parque de Bela Vista, a big and empty, but well maintained park that invites to roll some loops.

Back in the streets we come to the upcoming quartier of Marvila. Whole neighborhoods turned into streetart galleries. Craft beer breweries, coffee bars and vintage shops moved into the old industrial buildings and gave them new life.

Along a new park at Rio Tejo, we roll towards the next element of this wild mix: Parque das Nacoes, one of Lisbons most modern areas. Built for the EXPO 1998, nowadays is a modern shopping and business district with great views to the huge Vasco da Gama Bridge.

We only leave the cycling lane once now. Xabregas is home to one of Lisbons most famous streetart: “Bordalo II” and his huge trash-art animals. We see some of his artworks and with some luck even the artist in action!

If you want to take pictures from cosy squares and colorful tiles, this is not your tour! If you want to look behind this scenery, here it is

Baixa – Mouraria – Alfama – Graca – Intendente

During the day we avoid the historical parts of Lisbon. But at night is ours! Without the daily rush we can cycle streets in a zone which during the day are inaccessible. When traffic and heat calms down, Alfama, Graca and Mouraria is the best time for the charming oldtown. Join us on a bit different city tour!

Once we climbed up to Lisbons top level, we enjoy the best sunset views and cross a beautiful park in the middle of the oldtown. On our way down we discover the different faces of Lisbon with plenty of culture that has found its placein Portugals capital over the centuries.

Cycling in the dawn or dark is always a bit more complicated and dangerous. You don’t need specific bike skills, but you should be used to cycle and feel comfortable riding in unknown terrain.
