26 Stages to Select

Our System

From the Portugal’s capital Lisbon to Lagos at the Western Algarve: A journey to remote beaches, through picturesque villages and beautiful nature. Lisbon to Lagos might be the most classic of all bike holidays in Portugal; and there’s a reason why. The views from the cliffs, the paths along the unique Costa Vicentina, Mediterranean climate and the quickly changing ecosystems and landscapes provide perfect conditions for bike travels.

Two different options alow you to customize your trip daily.

With many off-road sections, some entiring sand roads and stages with up to 80k, Costa Vicentina is recommended to intermediate cyclists and ambitious beginners with good base condition.

Route Details

Beginners & Intermediate MTB Travels

Daily Baggage Transfer
Daily 2 route options

Total distance: 340 – 390 km (Ø 55km)
Total elevation gain: 3400 – 3800m (Ø 520m)

Terrain: 50- 60% side roads, 5-10% major roads, 30-40% gravel

Lisbon - Setubal
National Park Serra da Arrabida

Version A: 43km – 850m elevation gain
60% paved roads, 40% unpaved roads

Version B: 45km – 720m elevation gain
60% paved roads, 40% unpaved roads

Serra da Arrabida is our first stage. The mountain crest is already visible from Lisbon and at the northern foot of the hill we find the end of Lisbon’s city rush. By train we go to the village Palmela, an historic town, crowned by a massive castle. Here we start on mixed paved and unpaved side roads through shady cork forests and wine yards. After a while we start to climb steadily. Vegetation changes; the cork trees and wine yards make place for the dense green bushes of the Natural Park. When suddently the road turns around and opens for a breathtaking view to the endless ocean and the white sand beaches of Troia.

This is where our two options divide today. Left we continua uphill on a tough but impressive panorama road with a stunning view up to 100km all along the coast.
Right we roll down to the famous Praias da Arrabida: Portinho da Arrabida, Praia de Galapos and Praia da Figueirinha. Shortly before we reach Setubal both ways meet each other again at our first campsite directly on the ocean.

Setubal - Comporta
Ecosystem Rio Sado

Version A: 75km – 480m elevation gain
60% unpaved roads, 15%sandy roads, 25% asphalt

Version B: 45km – 260m elevation gain
30% unpaved roads, 70% asphalt

The second day starts with a ferry to cross Rio Sado to the dunes of Troia and the Natural Park Estuario do Rio Sado. Nativ flora of the dunes is one of the best preserved areas along the Portuguese coast. At the peninsula of Troia and in the river delta several rare species are home. Crabs, shells and frogs create a paradise for storks, hawks and ducks and hundreds of species of birds. On dirt roads we cross the fertil rice fields and see the famous stilt piers of Comporta.

This is where our two options device again.

Spend more time in the village of Comporta or at the beaches and soon you find todays destionation.

The long version follows all the way up the river delta to the old trader town Alcacer do Sal. From here southwards we reach teh finish line through the endless wine yards.

A remote winery opens the gates for us tonight. After a visit of the winery and destillery and the obvious wine tasting a 3 dishes menu and a bed in the middle of the wineyard awaits us.

Comporta - Porto Covo
Alentejo Countryside

Version A: 65km – 860m elevation gain
60% asphalt, 35% dirt road, 10% sand roads

Version A: 70km – 700m elevation gain
80% asphalt, 15% dirt road, 5% sand roads

The third day leads us along some more and less busy roads in the morning to the province town Santiago de Cacem. We reach Santiago for lunch. Again we can decide between two routes, which today both leads through the sandy cork and fine forests of the Alentejo, just that the easier is sticked more on the road ans skips some sandy parts.

Both routes get back together at the pretty artificial lake Barragem Morgavel. The white dunes around the lake indicate that the coast isn’t far anymore. Shortly later we reach the ocean near the cozy blue-white beach town Porto Covo.
Near Porto Covo is waiting one last uphill for us before our third stage ends at a horse farm in walking distance to the sea near the island Ilha do Pesseguero.

Porto Covo - Zambujeira
Costa Vicentina North

51km – 450m elevation gain
50% asphalt, 40% easy sand roads, 5% difficult sand roads, 5% cycling lane

In Porto Covo we reached the well-known Costa Vicentina. This stage is relatively short and absolutely worth to do, what is why there is no short option for this day.

The morning leads us on dirt and sand and asphalted roads through the typical fruit plantations of the region. After about 20km we reach Vila Nova de Milfontes at the bay of Rio Mira. This may invite for a for a first stop of the day. Another 10km later we reach the lonesome lighthouse of Cabo Sardao and the natural highlights of the day. A spectacular sand road leads along the cliffs almost all the way to the coastal town Zambujeiro do Mar.
South of Zambujeira our way still leads us up and down to the beaches of Zambujeira and Carvalhal before we find our next campsite. An old farm house high over the ocean which offers campsites with ocean view and all touristic comfort without loosing the rural origin.

Zambujeira - Aljezur
Costa Vicentina

Version A: 50km – 500m elevation gain
50% asphalt, 25% unpaved roads, 15% sand roads, 10% flat single trails

Version B: 44km – 460m elevation gain
70% asphalt, 20% unpaved roads, 10% sand roads

The morning of the fifth stage brings us on paved and unpaved roads to Praia de Odiceixe, one of the most pretty beaches of Costa Vicentina.

South of the the beach we have to climb steep from the river valley before our two options devide again.

The longer option goes all the way out to the next river delta and the remote beach of Praia de Amoreira before it follows up the river to the arabic look-a-like old town of Aljezur.

The shorter option meanwhile goes straight to Aljezur to spare some time and energy, as this will be needed. South of Aljezur is waiting the toughest uphill of our travel. After a long climb we slowly start to roll down in direction to the ocean again.

But we will only reach the Atlantic the next day. Today we end up at a freshly renovated farm house where once again dinner is included in the travel price.

Aljezur - Vila do Bispo
Cabo Sao Vicente & Europe’s West End

Version A: 75km – 650m elevation gain
40% asphalt, 40% unpaved roads, 20% sand roads

Version B: 72km – 570m elevation gain
70% asphalt, 25% unpaved roads, 5% sand roads

Our second last day is packed with highlights. The effort of the sharp uphill the evening before, allows us to roll down to the ocean for several kilometers to Carrapateira. An impressive panorama road surrounds the surfer and fisher village. Maybe it’s one of the best views of the coutry!

In the afternoon we arrive at Cabo Sao Vicente, the south-west end of Europe. The wild cliffs and the rough Atlantic waives are breathtaking, just as much as the wind. The wind is a massive factor on this stage and might decide if you now choose the easier option along the road or the tougher through the Algarve hills. About an hour later we reach the village Vila do Bispo and shortly later our last campsite: A beautiful and carefully maintained sustainable camping near the beaches of Figueira and Salema.

Vila do Bispo - Lagos
Western Algarve

Version A: 30km – 420m elevation gain
60% asphalt, 40% unpaved roads and sand roads

Version B: 23km – 260m elevation gain
90% asphalt, 10% unpaved roads and sand roads

Our last stage is a very easy one and gives enough time to discover the city of Lagos or relax on the beaches. On the way from the west we pass by the most beautiful sides of Lagos such as the pretty beaches of Barracao and the famous rock formations of Ponta da Piedade. Our way leads us directly through the old town to the port of Lagos, our finish line after almost 400km by bike!

For our last night we got a cosy pension in the city center of Lagos to enjoy the last night of this journey. Time to take a shower and find a last and well deserved dinner in the alleys of the historic city center.
