Porto – Obidos

Costa de Prata

Costa de Prata in Central Portugal is a great mix of natural and cultural attractions and accessable even for beginners.

With Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra are some of Portugal’s most authentic and important towns on our way. Endless cycling lanes, spectacular panorama views at Estrada Atlantica and calm traditional rural areas form the ideal contrast to this historical treasures. Our final destination Obidos is a unique medival town is just an hour by train from Lisbon.

Between Porto and Obidos we find our easiest route for bike holidays in Portugal. Not only that most stages are flat, but also are most stages can be shortened by train rides.

Porto - Ovar

55km – 230m elevation gain
25km Asphalt, 28km Cycling Lane, 2km gravel road
option: train from Espinho – Ovar

With a panorama view to Porto we start our journey along the south side of Rio Douro towards the ocean. Soon we find a cycling lane to the nearby coastal towns. The cycling lane leads us docents of km along the beaches and fisher villages. If we are lucky we see the heroic fishermen in their characteristic ancient trawlers rowing into the waives as they do it since hundreds of years.

Mostly flat we roll until Lagoon of Esmoriz. A wooden walking way leads us through this bird paradise. On the other side we find the beach towns of Esmoriz and Cortegaca. Where the urban zone ends start long pine forests

Ovar - Mira

68km – 220m elevation gain
37km Asphalt, 14km cycling lane, 17km unpaved road
option: train from Ovar – Aveiro

Ovar is located at the north end of Ria de Aveiro. The huge brackish water lagoon gets flooded with high tide and runs try by low tide. This is when the locals start to compete with plenty of sea birds for the delicious crabs and shells that hide in the mud. In the center of the lagoon is located Aveiro. The colorful city center with water channels and traditional Moliceiros boats is small but worth to see.
The lagoon on one side, the endless white beaches on the other, we cycle towards the source of the lagoon in the wetlands of Mira. At the end of Ria de Aveiro nature changes. Shady pine forests and little fresh water lakes characterize the landscape now. At a pretty country house directly at the shore of one of the lagoons is our next stay.

Mira - Coimbra

76km – 325m elevation gain
60km Asphalt, 16km unpaved road
train from Montemor-o-Velho – Coimbra

Today’s start is at the lagoon of Mira. Along the water channels we follow through diverse forests first and flat sand dunes later on. Several lagoons border our way along the lonesome side roads along the coast. With a little extra-mile we reach the small and calm beach village Praia da Tocha.

The historic town Montemor-o-Velho invites for lunch, before we follow the fertile river valley of Rio Mondego until Coimbra. The ancient Portuguese capital Coimbra hosts one of Europe’s oldest Universities and offers more than enough to discover for the rest of the day.

Coimbra - Pombal

64km – 510m elevation gain
46km asphalt, 18km unpaved roads
option: train from Soure – Pombal
Today our journey starts to get hilly. We start on the same way as we came the day before. But soon we leave the river south side. Side and gravel roads show us the typical diverse cultural landscape like wine yards, apple plantations or pine and eucalyptus forests.
In the small town Soure we find the railways and Rio Arunca and follow them. Shortly behind the city of Pombal we reach our next accommodation: an ancient watermill embedded to a forest and a lagoon.

Pombal - Nazaré

79km – 820m elevation gain
53km Asphalt, 20km cycling lane, 6km gravel road
option: train Marinha Grande – Pataias or Valado

Today is our longest and toughest stage. The start at the foot of Serra de Lousa comes with a few tough climbs, but at least those are mainly in shady forests. After a long downhill we are finally back in at the coast region. Wide parts of the coast in the region massive bush fires destroyed wide parts of the formally endless pine forests along the coast. Not so where we reach the coast. Around Marinha Grande and San Pedro de Moel the pine forests still reach until the cliffs and beaches. A long cycling lane along the ocean offers perfect conditions until Nazaré, which we reach at Miradouro do Suberco, one of the most spectacular view points during our journey.
From the view point we roll down to the coast within a few minutes and change the city for nature again. In an old remote farm house between the fields we spend the night .

Nazaré - Óbidos

44km – 650m elevation gain
38km Asphalt, 6km unpaved roads
option: train Sao Martinho do Porto – Caldas da Rainha

Our last day starts with the crossing of two mountains along the coast. Serra da Pescaria divides Nazaré from Sao Martinho do Porto. Serra do Bouro is between the charming coastal town of Sao Martinho and the river delta of Arelho. Wide views along coast and to the forests compensate for the effort.

At the beach of Foz de Arelho and the beginning of Lagoa de Obidos it’s time to say good bye to the ocean. Along the lagoon and up and down through the wine yards we reach our final destination: the wall surrounded medieval town Obidos. Our hotel is shortly outside the city wall. Comfortable to end our bike trip and get lost in the charming alleys of the old town.
