Pedal Portugal’s Stunning North
The Portuguese St. James Way, a captivating route for cyclists, offers a unique blend of cultural and natural beauty that enchants every traveler. As you pedal through lush landscapes, you’ll experience the breathtaking vistas of the Douro Valley, renowned for its terraced vineyards and serene river views. The valley is not just a feast for the eyes; it’s also a hub for beautiful wine tastings, where you can savor the region’s famous Porto wine.
Cycling enthusiasts will find that the rugged terrain of Gerês National Park is equally rewarding, featuring stunning waterfalls, ancient granite peaks, and abundant wildlife. The park’s trails cater to various skill levels, making it perfect for both newcomers and seasoned cyclists looking to challenge themselves.
Along the way, you’ll encounter charming villages, where traditional Portuguese architecture and vibrant local culture come to life. Each stop presents an opportunity to indulge in authentic regional cuisine, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that enhance your cycling adventure. The Portuguese St. James Way, complemented by the breathtaking beauty of Gerês and the Douro Valley, promises an unforgettable journey steeped in history, nature, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.
How to get there
Porto has suburban trains which connect Porto with many surrounding towns, such as Viana do Castelo, Braga or Guimarais. During the rush hour bike transportation might be a bit limited, but usually it’s comfortable and free of charge in all suburban trains
Santiago de Compostela suppuses over an own airport, which might be a considerable option. Spanish buses and trains refuse to transport bikes. Only once you are back at Portuguese terrain (Valenca ou Viana de Castelo) public transportation is an option with the bike. Without bikes there are frequently buses from Santiago de COmpostela to Porto
