Alentejo & Algarve
Costa Vicentina
The Sunny Alentejo coast
Explore an incredible journey from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, to Lagos in the Western Algarve. Discover remote beaches, meander through picturesque villages, and immerse yourself in the stunning nature of Costa Vicentina. The Lisbon to Lagos bike holiday is a timeless classic, and for good reason. Be captivated by breathtaking views from the cliffs, follow paths along the incomparable Costa Vicentina, and revel in the Mediterranean climate. With ever-changing ecosystems and landscapes, this extraordinary adventure offers perfect conditions for an unforgettable biking experience.
The most frequented cycling route leads from Comporta directly southwards via Melides to Sines. If you have more time, we suggest following Rio Sado from Comporta to AlcĂĄcer do Sal and returning to the coast only in Porto Covo. The ride through the interior introduces to another ecosystem during the journey, while avoiding a relatively monotonous part of the route along the National Road.
The most scenic sections, including the sandy road south of Porto Covo, the section following Cabo Sardao, and the circular path in Carrapateira, offer breathtaking vistas for biking enthusiasts. Explore picturesque villages like Porto Covo, Aljezur, Azenha, and Odeceixe, along with favored beaches such as Praia da Amoreira and Odeceixe.
Costa Vicentina is the most natural part of the Portuguese coast. Cycling lanes are scarce along the way. Instead, we share the road with traffic and mostly ride on broad and easily navigable sand roads. However, some parts may challenge even experienced cyclists. Traffic on the roads is usually calm, but between Troia – Sines and around Milfontes, some major roads are unavoidable.
Between Porto Covo and Sagres, marked long-distance routes in various colors await, guiding bikers on their journey. The blue/green route, known for its scenic hiking trails, diverges from the cycling path, primarily suitable for hikers. For bikers, we recommend following the green/blue route for a more suitable biking experience.
Crossing numerous river valleys, sharing the road with traffic, navigating sandy routes, and coping with summer heat turn this route into a moderately challenging ride. Even without extensive uphill and downhill sections, safe cycling and good bike control are necessary.

Some of the route’s most exceptional highlights are inaccessible by road bikes and require good skills on gravel bikes, especially if you’re riding with luggage. For road and gravel bikers, we suggest combining the coast with the quieter interior for a diverse biking experience.

Costa Vicentina boasts a mild maritime climate, offering favorable biking conditions almost year-round. The best time for bike travelers is spring and autumn, from April to June and September to October. These months offer pleasant temperatures averaging 20-30°C, ideal for exploring the rugged coastline and countryside. Summer, though warmer, sees temperatures up to 37°C, attracting more tourists but still suitable for biking. Winter can be wet and cooler, better suited for those who enjoy fewer crowds and are prepared for occasional rain.
The wind along Costa Vicentina tends to be pretty strong, mainly coming from the northwest. When biking south along the coast, you’ll often catch a helpful tailwind. But keep in mind, especially in winter, these winds can get pretty forceful, impacting your ride. Knowing which way the wind blows is essential for a smoother biking trip along this beautiful coastline.
